Tonight I was doing the usual, preparing the kids backpacks and making sandwiches for lunches tomorrow. I got out the loaf of bread from the fridge and began to lay out all of the pieces of bread that I would need to compile the sandwiches for the little mouths that I was responsible to feed tomorrow. After getting the correct amount of pieces of bread out, I looked at the top of the counter with all of those pieces of bread and was amazed. I was taken back at the amount of bread it took to feed my family. Over half of the loaf was gone.
At that very same moment of amazement, I was instantly overwhelmed with a deep feeling of gratitude that washed over my body, gratitude to my Heavenly Father. Tears filled my eyes. Each of those individual pieces of bread represented each of my dear children and a reminder to me how blessed I was to be their mother. Each sandwich I made was individual to each child and to their liking. As I made each individual sandwich, I reminisced about that child's individual personality and gifts they have shared with me over the years and how they have filled my life with joy. I was deeply touched. I didn't know that making peanut butter sandwiches could be such a spiritual event, but tonight, for me, it was. The Spirit testified to me how blessed I am to have each of these sweet spirits in my life and how blessed I am that Heavenly Father trusts me in their care to teach them and guide them back to Him.
I couldn't be more thankful that it takes over a half a loaf of bread to complete school lunch sandwiches for our family! Motherhood is a privilege and a blessing!
The Challenge: To cherish the peanut butter sandwich and those magical moments of motherhood!
“Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow.”

The Power of the Atonement
This blog is all about the thought that one is never to old
to learn and gain a greater knowledge, to accomplish, to achieve, to start
chasing after a life long dream, to learn a new skill, to change, or to become
who you are destine to become. That is
what “but a spring chick” means to me.
And with that thought, I feel much power and hope in my life!
With that said, I am thankful for another day to increase my
knowledge and understanding of Gospel truths.
This past year has been a wonderful year of deep pondering and learning,
of coming across those “ah, ha” moments that I never caught before, but are
life changing!
One of those “ah, ha” moments for me has been about the
Atonement of Jesus Christ. I have been
on this earth for 38 years and it has only been in the last year that I feel I
am finally getting a little glimpse and understanding of the immense power of
the Atonement, this amazing GIFT that our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have
given to me.
I use to always associate the Atonement with sin and that it
was the Atonement that helps us overcome sin and be forgiven for what we have
done wrong. I did not realize that the
power of the Atonement goes so much deeper.
The Atonement is the ultimate gift given to us from our
Heavenly Father, through His son Jesus Christ, because of His love for us, to
help us BECOME like Him! We are on this
earth to become like our Heavenly Father, so that one day we can stand in His
presence and live with Him and our Savior, Jesus Christ forever! It is ONLY through the ATONEMENT of Jesus
Christ that we can BECOME LIKE HIM.
In True to the Faith, it states that, “The word atone, means to reconcile, or to restore
to harmony.” I love that
definition. The Atonement “covers all” and restores to harmony. It covers all of my imperfections and allows
me to become something greater. I
picture myself as a person with all of these little holes within me. I have these little holes for different
reasons, for example, whether it be because of sin (big or small), sins of omission, self doubt (doubting myself as a
mother, a wife, within my callings, my talents), someone offending me and
causing hurt, physical sickness or aliment, depression, or loneliness. These holes appear over time and at different
times in my life. As I open the gift of
the Atonement and really apply it to my life on a DAILY BASIS, it is as if the power
of the Atonement is washing over my body and filling that imperfect hole and
making me whole again.
I picture the visual, which has been related to balancing
our time and filling our lives with what is most important. Picture an empty jar. It is filled with the big rocks first, then
the little rocks and pebbles, then sand is poured in and one would think, “there
is no more room in this jar”, until water is poured into it and the water fills
all the gaps that one thought did not exist and makes the jar full.
This is how I picture the Atonement for me. The Atonement, when I open up the gift and
allow the power to fill my heart, my mind, and my body, then does it fill those
imperfect holes I have created for myself.
It restores me to harmony and makes me full and whole again! What a
gift.
Each day I have different holes that show up within
myself. Some days I have one hole and some
days I have many. If I apply the
Atonement to my day, whether I have one or many holes that day, each of my imperfect
holes can be filled through my Savior, Jesus Christ. This allows me to then strive to become
better today than I was yesterday through this amazing power and gift!
I was asked today during visiting teaching, “So HOW does one
apply the Atonement in their lives?” I
believe that for each person it is different.
I can share with you how I do it.
The way I am able to allow the “water” or power of the Atonement
to flow over me is by starting out each day with the big rocks
(prayer, scripture study, spiritual study – other books, songs, manuals,
devotionals, conference talks, church attendance on Sundays etc.) so that I
have that strong foundation in my Savior, Jesus Christ and have FAITH in what
He CAN do within whatever situation I am facing. Then in the quite moments of
the day, I am able to TRUST my Heavenly Father and His WILL for me and allow
the water or “power of the Atonement” to flow over me through opening my heart
and allowing the love of my Savior, Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father to fill me
and heal that imperfect hole. I use all
of the knowledge I have learned about myself and my Savior, to give me understanding
towards whatever situation is occurring and to help me change my heart. It is then that the change happens, the
restoration of harmony occurs within my heart, and the love and peace follow.

Prayer and Power!!
During my scripture study yesterday morning, I came across a sentence that hit me so strong. I loved it! It made me sit back and ponder on my own prayers.
I was reading in True To The Faith under prayer: http://www.lds.org/bc/content/shared/content/english/pdf/language-materials/36863_eng.pdf
"The power of your prayers depends on
you."
There is great power in prayer, but as the above thought says, that power and degree of power that can exist is dependent upon ME!! There is great power to be had with prayer, but I must exercise my FAITH through MEANINGFUL payer. As I do so, an amazing power as described below emerges! How exciting!!
"As you make a habit of approaching God in prayer, you
will come to know Him and draw ever nearer to Him. Your
desires will become more like His. You will be able to secure
for yourself and for others blessings that He is ready to give
if you will but ask in faith. "
The Challenge: Apply a greater depth of faith through meaningful daily prayer

Mothers Who Know!
With the changes that have occurred in our family over the last 9 months which include the birth of our 7th beautiful child, my husband being called into the Bishopric of our ward, having a new high schooler and all that comes with that, and the increase of individual activities each member of our family has, I have found myself on several occasion in deep soul searching and pondering and prayer to my Heavenly Father asking how I am to accomplish all that is required of me without losing my identity and self and also asking what truly is my roll in life? What is is that Heavenly Father wants of me? I know what my general mission is on this earth life, but what is my specific mission at this time in my life, now, today? These were the questions in my heart.
I have felt quite "unbalanced" since the birth of my sweet little girl, trying my best to do it all and be the best, but finding myself confused, worn out, and uncertain where I fit into this juggling act. I new that this was not how the "PLAN OF HAPPINESS" was suppose to feel, so I knew I was missing something. I have prayed a lot to my Heavenly Father asking what it is that I need to focus on now in my life.
Last week, I was going about my day, when the October 2007 General Conference talk, "Mothers Who Know" by Sister Julie B. Beck (http://www.lds.org/general-conference/2007/10/mothers-who-know?lang=eng) entered into my mind. I did not know the title of the talk, or knew when it was given. The only thing that entered my mind was, "mothers who know do less!" I do not believe it was a coincidence that this phrase entered into my mind. I know it was the Holy Ghost answering a prayer to me from my loving Heavenly Father. I quickly looked it up and listened to this amazing talk.
It was all clear. This is where my focus should be, this should be my road map, this is what I should be doing. NOTHING else matters. This was a good reminder! I quickly realized that I had not been focusing on what was of most importance, but was filling my life with things that did not have eternal importance. I had forgotten who I truly was, what my true roll was on this earth, and what I was to become!
My whole focus on my life has changed over the last week. I have a new purpose, I feel a greater sense of my importance and need for my life. I have felt incredible joy in MOTHERHOOD over the last week, a feeling I have not felt completely in the last 14 1/2 years.
These are the highlights I learned from her talk:
-God's commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. President Ezra Taft Benson taught that young couples should not postpone having children and that "in the eternal perspective, CHILDREN - NOT POSSESSIONS, NOT POSITION, NOT PRESTIGE - are our greatest jewels."
-Faithful daughters of God desire children.
-The value women place on motherhood in this life and the attributes of motherhood they attain here will rise with them in the Resurrection.
-Mothers who know go to sacrament meeting where covenants are renewed and honor temple covenants.
-They know that if they are not pointing their children to the temple, they are not pointing them towards desired eternal goals.
3- MOTHERS WHO KNOW ARE NURTURERS
-This is their special assignment and role under the plan of happiness.
-To nurture means to cultivate, care for, and make grow. Another word for nurturing is HOMEMAKING. Homemaking includes cooking, washing clothes and dishes, and keeping an orderly home.
-Home is where women have the MOST POWER and INFLUENCE.
-Nurturing mothers are knowledgeable, but all the education women attain will avail them nothing if they do not have the skill to make a home that creates a climate for spiritual growth.
4- MOTHERS WHO KNOW ARE LEADERS
-In equal partnership with their husbands, they lead a great and eternal organization. These mothers plan for the future of their organization. (missions, temple marriages, education, prayer, scripture study, Family Home Evening)
-They build children into future leaders and are the primary examples of what leaders look like.
-Wise mothers who know are selective about their own activities and involvement to conserve their limited strength in order to maximize their influence where it matters most!!!
5- MOTHERS WHO KNOW ARE TEACHERS
-They are never off duty.
-A well-taught friend told me that he did not learn anything at church that he had not already learned at home. His parents used family scripture study, prayer, family home evening, mealtimes, and other gatherings to teach.
6- MOTHERS WHO KNOW DO LESS (SO POWERFUL!!!)
-They permit less of what will NOT bear good fruit eternally.
-They allow less media in their homes, less distraction, less activity that draws their children away from their home.
-Mother who know are willing to live on less and consume less of the world's goods in order to spend more time with their children.
-These mothers choose carefully and DO NOT TRY TO CHOOSE IT ALL.
-Their goal is to prepare a rising generation of children who will take the gospel of Jesus Christ into the entire world. Their goal is to prepare future fathers and mothers who will be builders of the Lord's kingdom for the next 50 years.
7- MOTHERS WHO KNOW STAND STRONG AND IMMOVABLE
-Who will prepare this righteous generation of sons and daughters? Women who know and love the Lord and bear testimony of Him, women who are strong and immovable and who do not give up during difficult and discouraging time.
-Latter-day Saint women should be the very best in the world at upholding, nurturing, and protecting families!

October 2007
"There is eternal influence and power in motherhood."
"The responsibility mothers have today has never required more vigilance. More than at any time in the history of the world, we need mothers who know...When mothers know who they are and who God is and have made covenants with Him, they will have great power and influence for good on their children."

It's all about balance!!
I heard the two best quotes today that tugged at my heart! There is so much truth and power in these quotes:
"A powerful person is a balanced person!"
"Balance is not a matter of fitting everything into your life; it is a matter of deciding what is important to you and fitting all the important things into your life!"
As I put these two quotes together and combine them with my belief on how to find balance which is, we find balance as we aligning ourselves with God's will, then we become invincible and powerful to be able to accomplish all things!!
The Challenge: Find balance through the important things in life!

You are what you think!
Yesterday I had one of those days!! It started off on the wrong note and just kept going from there. I was very emotional and quite grumpy and sometimes, just not nice. Throughout the day I found myself thinking negative thoughts about myself and thinking what a failure I am as a mother and a wife. It certainly didn't make for a happy home for anyone yesterday.
I had this impression that I should read though a little notebook of inspiration and thoughts I have written down from the past. I stopped on an entry from June 12, 2010. The thoughts were from a Stake Conference, from church (mormon.org), that I had attended. Here is what it said:
"You are what you think - Believe in myself!"
"Your thoughts will stay if you have a place to put them."
"As you change your thoughts, you can overcome your weaknesses."
"As we think and do we BECOME."
I was then reminded of something I had read the other day. It said:
"We grow in two ways...by removing negative weeds and cultivating positive flowers."
I was immediately humbled and was reminded what I needed to do. To often I get caught up in those negative thoughts. I was doing myself, and my family, no good by hounding on the negative. Okay, so I hadn't been my best that day. I needed to get rid of the negative thoughts about myself, ask for forgiveness, and have the courage to try again tomorrow. And so I did, and I have to say, today has been filled with happiness!
The Challenge: Keep the thoughts about myself positive!!

I came across this paper in my scripture bag. I put it in there over a year ago. It had some great quotes on it that I thought would be nice to post and ponder upon...

"When a righteous man and women commit to each other completely, the bond is impenetrable and eternal." - unknown

The power of LOVE!!
Although my 35th year is over and I am now embarking on my 36th year, I couldn't say goodbye to the "but a spring chick blog". I will continue to share bits and pieces of knowledge I learn and thoughts that inspire me to be better and of course...challenges for the coming days.
As yesterday was Valentine's Day (I love this holiday!!), I felt it appropriate to share with you a quote I received in church on Sunday about love.
"LOVE is what inspired our Heavenly Father to create our spirits; it is what led our Savior to the Garden of Gethsemane to make Himself a ransom for our sins. LOVE is the grand motive of the plan of salvation; it is the source of happiness, the ever-renewing spring of healing, the precious fountain of hope. As we extend our hands and hearts toward others in Christlike LOVE, something wonderful happens to us. Our own spirits become healed, more refined, and stronger. We become happier, more peaceful, and more receptive to the whisperings of the Holy Spirit." ~President Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Think about that...LOVE heals, refines, and strengthens our own spirits. LOVE also makes us happier, peaceful, and more receptive to the Holy Ghost. It's all about LOVE!!
The Challenge: seek to be filled with love and then show that love to others

A look back!
Well, Happy 36th Birthday to me!!!! Today is the big day!! One year ago today, I began my "but a spring chick" journey. What a year it has been. My goal with this blog was to focus on things I learned daily that I could try to emulate and work towards in improving myself over this past year. My goal was to become a better me, especially a better wife and mother. My goal was to try to have the best year yet, by looking at things with a cup half full and realizing that I can become whomever and whatever I want to become.
Well, I have to say it was a pretty amazing year. I am by far from perfect and the year was not all roses, in fact, there were some days that I wanted to give up. Yet as I look back on this journey, I am amazed at how far I have come from last year and how far I have grown as a person. Is there still lots of growing to be done? Yes, yet my heart is more full of gratitude, love, forgiveness, humility, belief in myself, and a greater understanding of my purpose here on this earth. I have learned much about myself and what and who I am capable of becoming.
May I share with you some of the things I have learned over this year.
1-I have learned that family is EVERYTHING! It is truly what matters most!
2-I learned that motherhood is the greatest gift I could ever have and never again will I ever discount being a mother or feel that I am nothing because all I do is "stay home with my children". It is one of the most important reasons I am here on this earth. It is a blessing and a privilege. I look at motherhood in a whole new light and thank my Heavenly Father for that blessing in my life.
3-I learned that motherhood is not easy and was never intended to be easy, so I quit looking for the easy route and just started enjoying the small "moments of magic" and tried to laugh through the "Calgon, take me away" moments.
4-I learned that balance in life comes from looking up and being aligned with my Heavenly Father's will. I learned that the question is not, "How do I find balance in my life?", the question to be asking is, "Is my will aligned with God's will?". If my will is in line with my Heavenly Father's will, then I have found that the balance magically falls into place with my life. He knows me better than I know myself. When I trust in His will, even though it doesn't make sense on paper, then all works out and joy and clarity fills my life.
5-I learned about the importance of HUMILITY and how destroying and destructive PRIDE can be. The prideful let go of the iron rod. Pride can destroy homes, families, friendships, and lives. As we look sideways and start to compare ourselves with others, we begin to fall into the trap of pride. As we humbly look up to our Heavenly Father and become teachable, we progress. Humility leads to progression.
6-I learned that I am a Daughter of God and when I felt that I couldn't possibly go on, my Heavenly Father cared enough to strengthen me and carry me along until I could stand on my own again.
7-I learned that forgiveness is imperative in life. As hard as it may be sometimes, it is the magic pill that softens hearts and allows love to flow in. Daily applying the principle of forgiveness can change lives.
8- I learned that a positive attitude and being full of gratitude makes life sweet!
9-I learned that TRUE and REAL LASTING happiness comes from living a righteous life and completely keeping the commandments of God! Nothing else brings greater happiness. There is no way around it.
10-I learned that anything is possible if I face it with courage and believe in myself!!
Cheers to another great year!! Who knows what the coming year may bring, for I am "but a spring chick". How grateful I am for this journey!

Week 52: The ABC's with F&T
What are the ABC's with F&T, you might ask? A few weeks ago, I was reading a great article from the Ensign from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was written from our modern day prophet, President Monson. It was an article focusing on the ABC's to living an abundant life. http://lds.org/liahona/2012/01/living-the-abundant-life?lang=eng The article made me ponder on the type of life I want to live and the things I could do to achieve that kind of life and be the kind of person I want to be.
I adopted President Monson's ABC's and added a few letters of my own, F & T.
A = Have a positive attitude
B = Believe in yourself
C = Face challenges with courage
F = Choose to forgive
and
T= Treat others how you want to be treated and
Temperance in all things
I created a little chart that I printed off and have posted by my computer so that I can see it every day. I am by far perfect and have a long way to go, but these ABC's F and T are a reminder daily to me of choices I can make to attain an abundant life.
This week's challenge: put into practice my ABC's F and T!!
I adopted President Monson's ABC's and added a few letters of my own, F & T.
A = Have a positive attitude
B = Believe in yourself
C = Face challenges with courage
F = Choose to forgive
and
T= Treat others how you want to be treated and
Temperance in all things

Week 50: Finding Balance
Happy New Year!! Another year to seize life and become better! As last year came to a close, I found myself pondering over the year and reflecting on what needed to change in my life for this coming year. As I looked back, I noticed a continual theme had surfaced in my life. I have noticed that over several years, I have been running in "overdrive", always fighting against the clock to get "everything" done and yet feeling that I always come up short. "There is not enough time in the day", seems to be the quote of the day I have found myself saying often. As I have pondered over this, for the last several weeks, the question has come to my mind:
How do I find balance in my life with all that is required of me and not enough time to fit it all in?
Balance...such a foreign word in my vocabulary.
Well, a few weeks ago I decided that I was going to take this question up to the Lord and ask for His guidance in knowing how to achieve, "balance" back into my life, so that I can be my BEST SELF!!
I have been praying and pondering and praying and pondering some more. Little by little the answers began to come. There was even an article in my church magazine, The Ensign of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in the December 2011 issue entitled, "How do I achieve balance in my life given all the demands on my time?" (http://lds.org/ensign/2011/12/questions-and-answers?lang=eng) Perfect!! In that article, there was a quote that hit me and directed me on a path to change somethings I am doing in my life.
"We face a lot of demands on our time. It is essential that we constantly evaluate how we are using our time...At time it may be necessary to say no to some obligations. We are counseled not to "run faster than we have strength" (Mosiah 4:27). We may want simultaneously to have immaculate homes, hold a position in the school's parent-teacher organization, spend hours working on our family history, and train for triathlons. However, "to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the the heaven" (Ecclesiastes 3:1). It is important that we have the courage to forgo commitments that do not make us better."
All the things I had on my daily "to do list" for myself and my family were all good, but I had too many of them. I realized, I needed to have the courage to make changes, forgo some of those "good" things, so that my family and I can be our better selves.
I did some hard thinking and have taken the courage to make some changes. I have backed off on work hours, prioritized more of my time each day devoted to only my children, changed the way I take care of household obligations to become more simplified and delegated out, backed off on the amount of extra curricular activities my children are in, have made a rule that we don't answer the phone after 9:00 pm, have scheduled more daily time to family and personal scripture study and have allowed time at the end of the day that is not scheduled with anything else, but free time for myself to do as I please.
I have already felt some of the weight of "rushing against the clock" lifted from off my shoulders as I have tried to have the courage to change and focus on what matters most. May the journey continue!

Week 47: Choose to love, choose to serve
With the hustle and bustle of the season this last week, I have found myself running against the clock getting ready for this party and that party, this event and that event, preparing this gift and that gift and have found myself not at my best self as the stress has overcome me. I have found myself being not as patient with my children and husband as I should be and feeling badly that I have not treated them as I should have, especially for this time of the year.
I have pondered a lot this week and reflected over the many interactions I have had with my family and thought "How can I do better?" I was cleaning my downstairs the other night getting ready for another party, when I came across a block my friend had made me. It says, "Simplify Christmas, Celebrate Christ". I really thought about this..."Celebrate Christ". How can I do better and have a more peaceful feeling in my home during this time and all year? By celebrating Christ and becoming more like him. I thought about Christ and the type of person he was. Was Christ ever unkind or impatient? The obvious answer is no. Christ always chose to love and to serve others. It was a choice he made. I have a choice just as my Savior did. I should CHOOSE to LOVE and CHOOSE to SERVE as our Savior did, no matter how hard, even and especially when life gets stressful. He set the true example, and I know as I celebrate that example, I and my family will find true happiness.
Since realizing this, I have found myself reminding my children and myself to choose love and choose service when contention starts to rise in our home. It is a choice we all must make.
As we choose to become as our Savior through love and service, our lives will become more full and filled with joy and happiness.

Week 46: Obedient Heart
Happy Holidays!! What a great time of year! Lots of great learning moments have occurred over the last few weeks. One of them was at a church Youth Standards Night. We as parents were able to attend with our youth and we went to three different classes all focused on standards and virtue. In one of the classes we received this quote that really hit me strongly.
"When obedience ceases to be an irritant and becomes our quest, in that moment God will endow us with power." - President Ezra Taft Benson
Wow!! I want to always be on God's team! I want to always have that power! Obedience brings true happiness and obedience brings power.
This week's challenge: surround my life with things that strengthen me to have an obedient heart

Week 42: Attitude is everything!!
Every morning when our family gets together to have scripture study before school, we also have a family devotional. Each week the topic changes and each day the person giving the devotional changes.
Today was my day to give the devotional and the topic was on "being cheerful". My though was that we cannot control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond and react to what happens to us. It is all about our attitude. We can "choose to be" cheerful, even when things don't quite go our way.
Later on in the afternoon, I was reading a paper that came home from one of my kids teachers and it talked about attitude. How fitting!! I was inspired by the quotes on the paper and thought I would share, especially since they went so well with my devotional;
"Attitude is everything!"
"Go for the WOW factor!"
"Effort is the key to success"
"If you don't believe, you will never achieve"
"What you put in is what you get out"
"If you aim for nowhere, that is just where you will go"
"Failure comes with can't, success comes with can!"
Amen! Attitude really is everything!

Week 41: Gratitude, Gratitude, Gratitude
Yesterday was a pretty amazing day. The night before on Friday, my husband mentioned that one of his lung cancer patients was raising money for lung cancer and was participating in the "2011 Free to Breathe" race. He said that he would like to participate and wanted to know if I would like to join him. "Sure" I responded. A nice 3.1 mile run in the morning sounded good and it was for a good cause. Little did I know what I was about to gain from that little decision.
We arrived the next morning and registered for the race. 600 people were there. It was a beautiful fall morning and the excitement was in the air. Many people wore signs who they were running "In memory" for. Some of the people had green shirts on. They were special, because they had lung cancer and were running for themselves. One of them was my husbands patient. She was ecstatic to see us. She greeted my husband with a big smile and warm words of gratitude to him for supporting her. Before the race started, she was able to speak to all the participants in gratitude for what they were doing and for helping support lung cancer. She mentioned gratitude for her family and even for her oncologist (my husband) for being there. I could tell this meant a lot to her.
The race started and we actually did quite well. But what was really rewarding was watching all the people cross the finish line in support of Free to Breathe and those with lung cancer. I was touched by those in the green shirts who were racing for their lives.
As we were waiting for the awards, my husband's patient was eager to introduce her parents, sister, and family members to my husband, her doctor. I listened to her parents thank my husband for helping their daughter and that just a year ago at the same race her mother didn't think they would be there yesterday. How grateful they felt. I sat there and listened to my husband's patient brag about and praise my husband to her family. I sat in awe and listened to her say how much she appreciated and loved my husband for what he had done for her over this last year since she had been diagnosed. Very sincerely she told me that my husband helps make her feel that she can do this. Then she began to thank me for sharing him and how hard that must be for me to sacrifice being away from my husband so much so that he can help touch the lives of his patients for the better.
I was more than humbled as I sat and listened to what was being said. I was humbled and grateful for this incredible husband I have and for the blessing I got to see first hand how his life touches the lives of others. And I was humbled to be in the presence of this amazing woman who has not sat back and said, "Oh, poor me, I have cancer, I will just sit back and give up the fight", but who has stood with courage over this last year with a smile on her face and in service to others and in the fight for herself and others with cancer.
I walked away yesterday getting so much more out of this experience than I went in giving. I walked away with a greater desire to be more like this amazing woman and to live my life with an attitude of gratitude for every day I have to live and for the little things I have, with the courage to make a difference in the world, with a desire to serve, to attack every day with a smile and positive attitude, and to never take anything for granted.
I am grateful that Heavenly Father allowed me to have and learn from this experience. It was truly a tender mercy that humbles me to strive to be better in all aspects in my life and to always be grateful for the little things.

Week 39: I am a daughter of God
I had a really special experience the week before Halloween that made me stop and remember that I am loved by my Heavenly Father.
As I said, it was the week before Halloween. My plate that week was FULL beyond full. In fact, it was about to topple over, it was so full. It was Tuesday of the week, I had all of my kids off to school except for my two youngest ones. I had just finished teaching a group exercise class and needed to quickly shower so I could put my baby down for a nap and then clean the house before I started teaching piano lessons.
As I quickly got in the shower, I found myself in a moment of feeling VERY overwhelmed as I recalled all I had to do for that specific day in addition to all I needed to accomplish the rest of the week. I felt stretched to thin and as if I was running a marathon without a break and yet not completing all that needed to be done. I immediately found myself in humble prayer, pleading to my Heavenly Father for strength and courage to accomplish all that I needed to do and asking for guidance that I might be able to use my time wisely to complete what was required of me as a mother, a teacher, with my new business, in fulfilling my callings, etc. I got out of the shower and continued to finish getting ready, when I just felt an even deeper need for my Heavenly Father. I needed to know right then that He was there. I just needed to feel His strength. I needed to feel Him close.
I stopped right there, got down on my knees again, and told my Heavenly Father that right there at that moment I needed His strength and I just needed to feel Him near. I told Him (mind you, I have never done this) that I was going to open my scriptures right then and I needed Him to tell me where to read. I stopped and waited, when right away a scripture verse came to my mind as clear as day as if someone was typing it in my head. The verse was Mosiah 27:13 in the Book of Mormon. I opened my scriptures and went directly to the verse.
This chapter in the Book of Mormon describes the story of Alma the Younger and how he, with the four sons of Mosiah, were destroying the Church. Verse 13 begins with an angel, who appeared to them in the previous verse, speaking to them and asking them why they were persecuting the Church? Then the angel said in verse 14; (which is what I felt Heavenly Father wanted me to hear)
"And again, the angel said; Behold, the Lord hath heard the prayers of his people, and also the prayers of his servant, Alma, who is thy father; for he has prayed with much faith concerning thee that thou mightest be brought to the knowledge of the truth; therefore for this purpose have I come to convince thee of the power and authority of God, that the prayers of his servants might be answered according to their faith."
Nothing more needed to be said. I was overwhelmed with a deep feeling of love from my Heavenly Father to the point that I could physically feel His arms around me. It was as if He was saying, "I know you, I hear you, I am here to be your strength, and I love you." I was reminded again at that moment that I am a daughter of God, that He knows me personally, that He hears every one of my prayers, that He is here to strengthen me and to cheer me on, and that He loves me more that I could ever fathom.
My testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ grew leaps and bounds that moment and in the testimony that I am a daughter of God. That knowledge is priceless and will ever be a beacon of strength to me throughout my life. For that I am ever grateful!

Week 37: Only believe
It has been awhile since I have posted on "but a spring chick", but I will tell you that I have been doing a lot of pondering during that time.
When I first decided to do this blog, the idea was to post every day about the things I had learned that would help me be a better person. I realized it was too hard to keep up. I then decided that I would post every week something I had learned. Well, as you can see, sometimes that has not happened. My first thought seeing that I have not posted in 4 weeks was, "Oh, great...you didn't meet your goal of posting every week." That thought in the past would have stayed in my head for awhile with probably some additional thoughts of, "I feel like I failed", "The blog is not complete", etc. Instead, I took a different view. My response instead was, "That's okay. I have been really busy. Life is life and I will just continue to post from this point on." What a big step for me!!! Looks like I am changing little by little for the better. Hooray!
Well as I said, the past four weeks have been filled with a lot of pondering about who I am and who I want to become. I had a profound "ah, ha" moment a couple weeks ago. As I was thinking about myself, who I was and how inadequate I felt in so many aspects of my life, the thought came to me that I use to be such a confident person and now I question everything I do and my ability to do it. I asked myself, "What made me confident then?" The answer clearly came into my head, "You believed in yourself."
That was the answer. Overtime, I had forgotten to believe in myself and had relied to long on a negative influence that told me I was not good enough. I am good enough and it was time I started believing in myself, my abilities, and my talents again. Following this realization, I immediately felt lighter, I stood a little taller, and I felt a strength and a confidence I had not felt in a long time. It was time for the insecure me to leave me, to stop worrying about what others thought about me, and begin believing in myself.
I think of the scripture in Mark 9: 23 -
"All things are possible to him that believeth."
What truth that scripture rings. All things are possible in my life as I believe in myself, for I am "but a spring chick!"
